Some of my most cherished memories involve spending the summer at my grandparents’ house in the northern U.S. After a day spent playing outside, I always enjoyed my grandmother’s homemade blueberry pie topped with ice cream. As I grew older, she taught me how to make her pie, including special tricks to make the crust tender and flaky. Sometimes we made it with fresh blueberries we had picked at a farm. Other times we used frozen ones. To this day, every time I taste blueberry pie, I recall those days.
Something seasonal
The warmth of the sun ripens tasty summer fruits and vegetables. Many summer dishes use these foods that taste better at this time of year than any other. For my family, that meant eating sweet corn on the cob with butter. We also ate slices of juicy tomato with salt and pepper.
People in other countries may not associate summer with blueberry pie or tomatoes. But many have other special treats that make them think of sunny summer days. |
