Captain America: Civil War marked the arrival of the third Spider-Man but only the first Spider-Teen. Reviews were good for Tom Holland’s truly adolescent take on the superhero, but how did he come to wear the suit?
A start on the stage
It turns out that dance is Tom Holland’s first love. He studied the subject and performed on the street. It was at a dance festival that he was noticed by a choreographer and was invited to try out for Billy Elliot the Musical. After eight auditions and two years of training, Tom joined London’s West End production at age 12, rotating in the lead role for almost two years.
A first in film
After leaving Billy Elliot, Tom got an agent but was uncertain of his next step. Within two months, he was cast in a film about the 2004 tsunami called The Impossible, barely allowing him to catch his breath. Though demanding, filming tidal waves and family separation provided a realization: “That’s what I wanted to do – to make movies and entertain people.” |
